Hypnosis

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of consciousness that we all experience.  It may be defined as concentration in a dreamlike state and is similar to the stage between wakefulness and sleep.  But a person in hypnosis is far from being asleep and does not lose control.  A person in a hypnotic state is aware of his/her surroundings in a detached sort of way and is more receptive to acceptable suggestions.  Hypnosis is an interactive process, and a  hypnotized person will not accept any idea or suggestion that is against his/her will.   Therefore: 1) no one can be forced to do anything that they do not desire to do, and 2) the most important key for success is that each person truly desires to achieve the goals that are pursued.

Although achieving a deep state of hypnosis appears to be easier for some people than others, anyone who wants to be hypnotized can be.  And like most things, the more a person practices hypnosis, the more effective will be.

Fifty years ago, the American Medical Association recognized hypnosis as a legitimate and safe approach to medical and psychological problems.  Today, more people recognize that the mind and body are integrated parts of a whole being, and hypnosis is being sought out more and more to help people improve the quality of their lives.

How is hypnosis used in therapy?

Hypnosis can be used as a tool to help resolve nearly any issue that may bring someone to therapy.  In the relaxed and focused state of hypnosis, clients may receive suggestions they are wanting to incorporate into their thoughts and behavior, may be guided through experiences they want to heal or improve, or may explore the causes of frustrating or confusing behavior patterns.

Some particular areas in which people have received help are:

  • stress management
  • trauma recovery
  • performance enhancement
  • phobias
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • enhancing self-esteem
  • disturbing memories
  • nonsmoking and habit control
  • and more....

Please feel free to discuss whether hypnosis may be helpful for you.
